Crimson Fists: A Legacy of Heroism

Last weekend saw the release of a brand new novel by Mike Lee (his first Black Library novel since Nagash Immortal, fact fans!) starring a squad of Crimson Fists Space Marines as they battle to survive behind enemy lines during the ork invasion of their home world. It’s called Legacy of Dorn, and it’s a perfect showcase for the indefatigable nature of the Chapter and their refusal to fail, no matter the odds. We caught up with Mike to see just why the Crimson Fists hold such fascination for him. Here’s what he had to say.

Mike:
The best heroes are the underdogs – the scrappy fighters who take on the goliaths, knowing that all the odds are against them but fighting the battle anyway. Not because they want to, but because they have to. We admire them for their courage in the face of certain defeat and cheer them even when they fall. When they triumph, they become legends.

It’s strange to think of Space Marines as underdogs, but that’s exactly what the Crimson Fists are. When Snagrod’s Waaagh! invades Rynn’s World, they lose nearly everything in the blink of an eye: their ancient fortress monastery, their sacred relics, their precious stores of gene-seed, not to mention hundreds of their brethren. The few survivors are left with little more than a handful of vehicles and their personal wargear, against the largest greenskin onslaught the Loki Sector has ever seen.

A disaster of that scale might destroy a lesser Chapter. Its leaders might accept the inevitable and seek a glorious death in battle against the invaders. But not the Crimson Fists. They heed the words of their Chapter Master, Pedro Kantor, and dig in, determined to hold out until the very last. They face the impossible with courage and iron determination, knowing that each day they survive brings Rynn’s World closer to salvation.

But victory at Rynn’s World is only the beginning. Never in the history of the Imperium has a Space Marine Chapter lost so much and survived. If the Crimson Fists are to rebuild, they will have to prove to the Lords of Terra that they are still a force to be reckoned with. The Chapter must cultivate new strategies, new allies, and think beyond the strictures of the Codex Astartes if it is to survive.

The Crimson Fists who will shape the future of the Chapter will be forged in the crucible of Rynn’s World. Warriors like Veteran Sergeant Sandor Galleas and his squad.

Thank you, Mike! You can find out just how Galleas and his battle-brothers survive to reforge their Chapter in Legacy of Dorn, available to download as an eBook now from the Black Library website, iBooks and the Kindle store – or you can order the hardback. You can also discover more about the invasion of Rynn’s World in Steve Parker’s aptly-titled Rynn’s World, available as an eBook.
