Artwork of Prospero

The Battle of Prospero is one of the defining moments of the Horus Heresy, and it’s fair to say, of the entirety of Warhammer 40,000 history. It set the paths of two demi-gods, and their Legions of superhuman warriors, on courses that would have ramifications 10,000 years into the future.

As befits such a monumental event, it has often been depicted in loads of artwork, most recently on the incredible cover of the Burning of Prospero box.

We’ve collected a few of our favourites together below, and in them, you can see how the depiction of Prospero – and the capital Tizca in particular – has evolved. The golden spires and glass pyramids have always been there, but you can see the details start to become a recurring theme on the later pieces. Neil Robert’s covers  (Thousand Sons, and Prospero Burns) may have done the most to really solidified the look and feel of the city, if only in its last days… just before it was wiped off the face of existence.

If you’re a big fan of Horus Heresy artwork, it’s well worth picking up a copy of Visions of Heresy. Prospero is just one of dozens of iconic battles captured in this impressive coffee-table book, and its pages are brimming with tales from the founding of the Imperium. It’s also a great resource for anyone collecting a Horus Heresy army – loads of inspiration in there for obscure units and heroes.
