New Year, New Armies and More: Reveals from the New Year’s Open Day

At today’s New Year’s Open Day, a few lucky fans have had a chance to get up-close and personal with some awesome upcoming releases – so awesome, in fact, that we thought they’d be worth sharing with you. After all, it’s not every day the Adeptus Custodes return to the 41st Millennium…

Warhammer World Open Days always see some exciting reveals, and today’s New Year Open Day is no exception. Whatever you play, we’ve got codex news, golden guardians and stirrings from the Realm of Death, so we’ll dive right in…

The Adeptus Custodes in Warhammer 40,000!

After decades of waiting, the Golden Legion is finally coming to Warhammer 40,000 in full, with new units, commanders, a codex and much more. (Did you really think we’d stop at Trajann Valoris?)

This year, the Adeptus Custodes will be transformed into a fully fledged army with a vast array of new units to conquer the battlefields of the 41st Millennium. After so many centuries focused on the defence of Terra directly, Captain-General Trajann Valoris has sent the Emperor’s bodyguard forth into the galaxy – after all, a threat to the Emperor’s life can originate from anywhere in the Imperium, and with the war for mankind’s survival more desperate than ever, all must fight.

Finally, if you’ve already got a sizeable collection of  Forge World Legio Custodes, rules are on their way for you to use your favourite units in Warhammer 40,000, in addition to the huge range of new plastic kits.

Codex: Thousand Sons

Worry not, children of Chaos – these new lapdogs of the Corpse Emperor will be met in force by some old friends. The Thousand Sons will be coming back to settle old hatreds thanks to their first ever(!) codex, packed with all the awesome stuff you’ve come to expect from this generation of books – Stratagems, psychic powers and much more besides.

That’s not all, however – as well as giving you plenty of new ways to build and customise your Thousand Sons army, some new units will be making their debut in Warhammer 40,000. Thanks to the new codex, you’ll be able to lead your Tzaangor into battle with the Tzaangor Shaman or support them with disc-riding Tzaangor Enlightened – perfect if you’ve been looking for an excuse to pick up these models for your Tzeentch army. For those of you willing to risk mutation or madness, you’ll also be able to enlist a massive Mutalith Vortex beast to your dazzling ensemble, further expanding the forces the Changer of Ways.

Battletome: Legions of Nagash

What about the Mortal Realms? Worry not, generals – the Open Day also saw some exciting reveals for Warhammer Age of Sigmar. While the Malign Portents remain as mysterious as ever, one thing is certain – something great and terrible is rising in Shyish, and Nagash is behind it. This year promises to be a huge one for Death players, and we’re getting things started with Legions of Nagash, a new battletome with not one – but SIX! – allegiances within:

Since the start of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, each Grand Alliance has evolved to feature more factions, allegiance abilities and options for collecting; from the mixed Order armies of the Great Cities to the god-marked cavalcades of Chaos. Battletome: Legions of Nagash is designed to make sure that Death players have just as many options as their counterparts. Inside, you’ll find the warscrolls for every single Death model (so far…) alongside four new Allegiances within Death – the Grand Host of Nagash, Legion of Shadows, Legion of Sacrament and Legion of Blood. You’ll also find rules for the Soulblight vampires, if you’re looking to field one of Death’s most elite armies. If you would rather have an army formed from multiple facets of Nagash’s legions, there are also rules for those who pledge themselves more generally to the powers of Death.

The particularly devout among you may have spotted that each of these corresponds to a Mortarch (or Nagash himself), and each allegiance, while using a mixed pool of Death units, will feature its own unique in-game mechanics and abilities.

It’s not just rules, either – inside, you’ll find your guide to the realm of Shyish and what everyday life is like for the denizens of Nagash’s kingdoms – from the serried ranks of Deathrattle skeletons cutting lumber in the woods of Carstinia to sinister cities where the living and the dead dwell alongside each other. We’ll have more previews on the way closer to the release of Battletome: Legions of Nagash, but if you’re still hungry for the forbidden lore of Death, check out the Malign Portents website.

A Year of Events

If you’re looking for an opportunity to test your tactical skills, meet some fellow gamers or just show off an army you’re particularly proud of, 2018 is full of awesome events right here at Warhammer World (and beyond!) for you to participate in. For starters, March will see Warhammer Age of Sigmar players battle over the Wonders of the Algoraxi in a campaign weekend, or they’ll be able to battle alongside a friend in the doubles tournament.

Meanwhile, if you’re a Warhammer 40,000 player and missed out on your chance to take part in the Grand Tournament, 2019’s season will begin in June, allowing you to participate in high-level tournament play and quite possibly walk away as Grand Champion.

Finally, there’s not just one Warhammer Fest this year, but two! As well as an event in the UK in May, if you’re based in continental Europe (or just fancy a trip there), August will see Düsseldorf transformed into a home-away-from-home for the Warhammer hobby. If you fancy participating in the Golden Demon, meeting the people that make your hobby, or just want to check out some exclusive previews, this is your chance.

You can read the complete events calendar for 2018 on the Warhammer World website.

Anything Else?

That’s all we’ve revealed about the coming year so far, and there’s still much more to come! While we can’t give away anything just yet, you may want to keep your eyes peeled around the time of the Las Vegas Open, when we’ll be holding a very special studio preview. In the meantime, let us know what you’re looking forward to most on the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar Facebook pages!
