Road to AdeptiCon – Part 3

Jes Bickham reports from the Books and Box Games Studio as our intrepid aspirants prepare themselves for their groundbreaking trip to AdeptiCon 2017…

Jes: As you’ll know from my last post about the Road to Adepticon, four of us from the Books and Box Games Studio are going to AdeptiCon to play in the team tournament, present a few seminars, and make some exciting announcements. We’re all super-excited about it, to say the least.

In my last post, I mentioned the armies we’ll be taking to the Warhammer 40,000 team tournament, as follows:

Me – Cult Mechanicus
Pete Foley – Astra Militarum
Ben Johnson – Ultramarines
Robin Cruddace – Grey Knights

Now, we’ve decided that we’ll be bringing along studio armies, as we think it’ll be pretty cool for our opponents to play against the armies you can see in the books we publish – and the forces we’re taking have a decidedly Gathering Storm flavour too. (We will, of course, absent ourselves from any painting award considerations!) We’re also going to be bringing a jaw-dropping display to put our armies on as well… more on this soon!

However, I’ve set a small challenge for myself. I’ve had such fun painting the new Belisarius Cawl miniature (the almost-finished model is pictured here) that I’m challenging myself to get a Cult Mechanicus force of my own painted in time for the event, rather than take the studio army. Can I do it?

Our team gets 1,000 points per player for the team tournament with some restrictions (check out the event pack at to see). Here’s what I’m planning on taking:

Belisarius Cawl (200)

3x Kataphron Destroyers with heavy grav cannons (165)

3x Kataphron Destroyers with heavy grav cannons (165)

3x Kastelan Robots with twin-linked heavy phosphor blasters and carapace-mounted heavy phosphor blasters, and Datasmith with Mask of the Alpha Dominus relic (470)

That’s 1,000 points on the nose! Next up on my painting station are the first three Kataphron Destroyers. Wish me luck!

Meanwhile, on Friday afternoons, we have started a Warhammer 40,000 ‘boot camp’ to get ourselves fully prepped for the AdeptiCon Warhammer 40,000 Team Tournament.

In part, this is to help Ben learn all about playing Warhammer 40,000, since his day job has him entirely consumed by all things Warhammer Age of Sigmar. He is well on his way, though, and last Friday he acquitted himself well in a practice game using Robin’s Howling Griffons versus the dastardly forces of the Black Legion, controlled by Pete. (The photo above is Pete and I during that very game.)

We’ll be bringing you much more on our progress as we prep for AdeptiCon soon. Stay tuned!
